John and I went scuba diving on Saturday. I've been diving once before but the second time was no easier. Sea life is extraordinary and the ability to engage with it at close range is incredibly exciting. Unfortunately, as soon as my head is underwater, it's all panic and stress and before I know it, I've hyperventilated my way through half the tank before I'm even two metres deep. For me, breathing underwater and being under for long periods of time feels wildly unnatural and completely counter intuitive.
This installation, "Swimming Pool" by Leandro Erlich comes close to describing how I feel under there. It's fascinating how this installation plays with our preconceived notions of water, how we expect it to behave and how we expect our bodies to relate to it.
I do hope I can deprogram my brain soon because other than the breathing thing (which, unfortunately, is rather important) I really quite enjoy an aquatic adventure.
