the original hoyts cinema.

Thursday 22 September 2011

When I imagine a commercial cinema, I think of backlit fluorescent signage and bad nylon carpet with garish patterning. We just got a new book in our office called "James Muller, The Complete Works" by Jaqueline C.Urford, Walsh Bay Press. Included in the book are images of the original Hoyts Cinemas on Bourke St (1966-68), before it underwent a series of “improvements.”

How I’d like to return to these days of restrained grandeur. I'd swap ugly purple carpet for this delightfully detailed timber ceiling any day.
